OUR APPROACH TO PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Our Physical Education (PE) programme uses a blended approach, combining functional fitness (bodyweight movements and safe, age-appropriate resistance) with progression through a wide range of curriculum sports.
This approach ensures that children:
⪼ Learn how to move correctly and safely
⪼ Build strength, coordination and confidence
⪼ Successfully apply these skills within sports and games
⪼ Develop a positive, lifelong relationship with physical activity
Functional fitness is not taught instead of sport. It is used deliberately to support and enhance performance, safety and enjoyment across the PE curriculum.

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY FUNCTIONAL FITNESS?
Functional fitness focuses on teaching children how their bodies move and produce force using purposeful, well-chosen exercises and equipment. Sessions include a combination of:
≔ Bodyweight movements.
≔ Plyometric activities (such as jumping, hopping and controlled box jumps).
≔ Resistance training using light weights and equipment such as kettlebells, medicine balls and resistance tools/ methods.
These activities are used to teach natural movement patterns including squatting, lunging, hinging, jumping and landing, pushing, pulling, rotating and bracing.
All equipment is introduced openly, positively and with clear intent. Children are taught how to use equipment safely, responsibly and with good technique.
Resistance and Plyometric Activities Are:
≔ Age-appropriate and carefully selected
≔ Fully supervised by trained staff
≔ Progressed gradually from simple to more complex movements
≔ Focused on technique, control and movement quality rather than load or height
WHY WE USE EQUIPMENT, WEIGHTS AND PLYOMETRICS ?
Using equipment such as kettlebells, boxes, balls and light weights plays an important role in helping children develop strength, coordination and confidence when used correctly.

How Functional Fitness Supports Sport
Functional fitness provides the physical foundations children need to succeed in PE and sport. Strong movement skills allow pupils to:
ᯓ➤ Run more efficiently
ᯓ➤ Jump and land safely
ᯓ➤ Throw, catch and strike with control
ᯓ➤ Applying power to these movements
ᯓ➤ Change direction with balance and agility
Positive, supervised use of equipment helps children:
✮ Learn how to absorb and produce force safely through jumping and landing
✮ Develop strength and stability needed for sport and daily movement
✮ Improve posture, balance and coordination
✮ Build confidence around equipment rather than fear or misuse

CURRICULUM SPORTS WE TEACH
Children apply their functional fitness skills across a wide range of National Curriculum-aligned sports and activities, including

SAFETY AND SUPERVISION
Safety is central to everything we do :
ᯓ➤ All sessions are planned and supervised
ᯓ➤ Clear demonstrations and safety cues are provided
ᯓ➤ Equipment is appropriate for age and ability
ᯓ➤ Progression is gradual and carefully monitored
Our priority is to help children grow stronger, healthier and more confident in a safe and supportive environment . blending functional fitness with curriculum sports, we ensure children :
ᯓ➤ Move better
ᯓ➤ Feel more confident
ᯓ➤ Enjoy PE
ᯓ➤ Are prepared for lifelong physical activity

This approach aligns fully with the National Curriculum for Physical Education and supports children’s physical, mental and social wellbeing.
